Update #3 – 90 Day Health & Fitness Challenge (P90X)

So things are moving along with the workouts and the nutrition makeover.

I want to talk a little bit about the actual P90X workouts.  I’ve always been one to become board with the same old workout day after day.  BUT I have not had that problem with the P90X workouts because you have a completely different workout each day of the week.  So I have been working out every day for three weeks but have only done each workout three times!  These workouts contain so many different exercises that the hour+ flys by pretty quickly!

My favorite workout right now is Kenpo X, which I do on Saturdays.  Here is the description from Beachbody’s Fitness Guide:  “The word Kenpo means “law of the fist,” and that’s exactly what you’ll be throwing during this cardio-intense workout.  That and a whole bunch of kicks, elbows, knees, and forearms.  You’ll learn a highly effective way to defend yourself, while at the same time getting one heck of a total-body, super-cardio workout.”  Now, I am about the least violent person that I know, so I didn’t really expect to like it that much.  However, this workout is fun, fast moving and I even find it kind of stress relieving!

My least favorite is the one that I expected to like the most because I use to love my daily power yoga workouts.  Now I dread Yoga all week – it is so “in my face” with how out of shape I have become that right now I just kind of hate it.  Once I could do every single one of these moves and loved them – now they are uncomfortable, sometimes hurt and oh so hard!  I can’t wait for the day when I can make it through this workout doing every single move!!!

When Angela did her last post and talked about being discouraged because of gaining a few pounds in her first week, I knew exactly what she was talking about.  It’s happened to me before and I’m sure to most people.  Many people get discouraged by this because they are working so hard and they don’t think there are any results so they quit.  Well in one of the videos (I can’ t remember right now which one) Tony Horton talks about what happens in that first week or two when you are doing intense workouts and muscle training.  The exercise causes little rips in the muscle tissue of those muscles that have been worked harder than they are used to.  Our bodies then retain fluid to protect those little rips and that can account for a little weight gain in the first couple of weeks.  So if you start a workout and gain a little weight – don’t give up – it is most likely just water weight and will go away very soon!  By week three or four you should really start to see some weight come off.  Plus weight can fluctuate as much as 5 lbs throughout the day, so one step on the scale does not tell all!

I have one more week before I have to weigh in and post my starting pictures and my “after 30 days” photos.  I will admit I am nervous about it.  I really, really hope there is a difference!

I do have more energy, I feel healthier and stronger.  I can do more in each workout and my heart rate doesn’t go sky high every time I start a workout.  In fact the last few days, my heart rate has stayed in the target zone almost for the whole workout – this is an amazing improvement!

The other great improvement I have made is giving up my pop or soda as they call it here in the south.  I will occasionally still have one with dinner, but it used to be my drink of choice all day (diet coke) and now I am all about drinking the water.  Especially the wonderful Herbal Water that we are being supplied with during our fitness challenge.  When Dr. Alaya decided to combine culinary herbs with pure water, she created the most unique and refreshing drink of water that I have ever experienced!  My favorite flavor this week (or today) is the Ginger Lemon Peel.  I have long used ginger for a remedy for an upset stomach and ginger lemon peel water is really soothing at the end of a super hard workout!
