A complete cooking course for kids, from food guru Annabel Karmel

Encourage a love of healthy food for life with this one-stop cookery book.

Get your child involved in all aspects of cooking – from choosing the ingredients, basic preparation and adding flavour to nutrition. Your child will pick up key cooking techniques; from slicing, dicing and chopping to how to cream, sift, knead and whisk. Plus, they’ll learn how to whip up over 60 delicious and healthy recipes that the whole family will enjoy, from pancakes to risotto.

If your child only has one cookbook – make it this one!

At first glance in this book I thought oh man I won’t be able to make all these pretty things.. Even though it’s a book for kids, you know as an adult we sometimes can be a little lazy with our cooking or at least I know I can be lol.. Goolash, mosh posh, slip slop gotta disquise the veggies somethow, so whatever works! lol

As I started to look through the book more I was in awe how simple everything is laid out to help you learn the in’s and out’s of cooking and also includes some amazingly delicious recipes. The only bad thing is I think I gotta get more groceries because I have to try all of them out now

This book includes:

Kitchen Equipment – pictures and names of all the typical kitchen items.

Healthy eating – Info on the basics of the food chart with more details.

First Steps – Boiled eggs & Scrambled eggs, Basic Omelet, How to make toast and more…

Light Bites – Corn Chowder, Chicken pasta salad, making bread dough and more…

Main Meals – Sticky chicken drumsticks, chicken scallops, Best burgers and more…

Sweet Treats – Best muffins ever, Carrot Cake, Marble cake, vanilla cupcakes, tropical granola bars and more…

Techniques – preparing ingredients & flavoring, baking techniques and more…

With the Little Fruit Tarts recipe from the book we made some tarts with strawberries and kiwis. The amounts in the recipe are perfect to make sure you get just the right amount of everything included for a great tasting HEALTHY desert!!

My favorite thing about this book: I love that every recipe and technique shows that you don’t have to be a 5 star chef with thousands invested in kitchen tools, ingredients and equipment to make your food taste good and look pretty. These kiddos in the book definately had fun cooking.

Like Annabel Karmel suggests “If your child only has one cookbook – make it this one!”

Take a peek in this great book and buy it for your kiddos here.

As I have mentioned before, I love finding something that is both fun AND educational at the same time and the books from Nomad Press deliver every time! Explore Rocks and Minerals! by Cynthia Light Brown and Nick Brown is another great educational book offered from Nomad Press. You may remember my recent review of Amazing Math Projects You Can Build Yourself, if not you can find it here.

About the book (from Nomad Press): “Have you ever wondered what those sparkly specks in the piece of gravel in your driveway might be? Or why some crystals grow so big? In Explore Rocks and Minerals! kids can try activities that will help them figure out the answers, from testing minerals and making crystals, to making yummy models of the earth and volcanic meringue cookies. Explore Rocks and Minerals! presents an in-depth discussion of how minerals form, teaching readers ages 6–9 all about some of the most interesting and most common minerals. It also explores how and why the earth changes, including the rock cycles of igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks.

The book introduces kids to fossils and what they tell us about the past, and how to start their own collections of rocks, minerals, and fossils. Sidebars about people in geology, such as a kid who helped discover a new kind of dinosaur, or a geologist who proposed a theory that no one else believed for a long time, help kids see the human side of geology. Kids can read about researchers who use cornstarch and water to learn more about how volcanic rocks form six-sided columns, then try exactly the same experiment themselves. Students and teachers can try the experiments and read through the book systematically to get the big picture, or they can pick out projects to try in any order.”*

About the Author: “Cynthia Light Brown has a Master’s degree in Earth and Planetary Science and twenty years experience as an environmental consultant specializing in pollution prevention, toxicology, and risk assessment.
Nick is fifteen years old, and brings a young person’s viewpoint to the subject. Nick loves science more than anything else – biology, geology, chemistry, physics – he’s never happier than when trying out an experiment or reading about the latest research.“*

About the Illustrator: “Bryan Stone has worked on a variety of professional comics and illustration projects, including drawings for Dartmouth College’s Hopkins Center and a monthly, three page, comic called Onion Head for Bash Magazine.
My Thoughts: Although this book is intended for kids ages 6 – 9 or grades 1 – 4, my 10 year old 5th grader really liked it. I am surprised when I read through Explore Rocks and Minerals! (and the other books from Nomad Press that I have read) how much I learn! I know I had all this stuff in school myself but have forgotten many of the details over the years. We love the hands on projects like “Make Your Own Earth” and “Make Your Own Stalactites”. Many projects are simple enough for the older kids to do with minimal supervision, but it’s more fun to join in with the kids! The illustrations are cartoon like and fun, even for the younger kids. Overall I was very impressed with Explore Rocks and Minerals! and highly recommend it as another great addition to your child’s home library.

If you home school your children you should definitely check out the fun and educational books put out by Nomad Press!

Bardos is another great educational book offered from Nomad Press. You may remember my review of Amazing African Projects You Can Build Yourself, if not you can find it here.

Solve the world’s hardest two-piece puzzle. Pass a straight line though a curved slot. From prime numbers to paraboloids, activities in Amazing Math Projects You Can Build Yourself introduce you to the beauty and wonder of math through hands-on activities.

Learn by building, playing, and doing. Cut apart shapes to discover area formulas, build beautiful geometric models to explore their properties, and amaze your friends with the mysterious Möbius strip.

Throughout the book, there are examples of how we encounter math in our daily lives. Marvel at the mathematical patterns in snowflakes and discover the graceful curves in the Golden Gate Bridge. You’ll never look at soap bubbles the same way again!

Amazing Math Projects You Can Build Yourself includes projects about number patterns, lines, curves, and shapes. Some activities show you a new way to look at math that you have learned in school; others give you a glimpse of things to come; and finally, some are simply fun. Each activity includes intriguing facts, vocabulary builders, and connections to other topics. A companion website includes video instructions for many projects in the book and provides additional activities. Who would have thought that math could be so much fun?“*

My Thoughts: This book is intended to kids ages 9 and up and my 10 year old was interested in the book right away. We both loved the hands-on learning activities that are used in really creative ways. The activity used to teach multiplying fraction was especially helpful in helping my daughter to understand the concept of fractions. I even learned some things too… if someone would have explained counting in different numeral systems and how it applies to computer programming to me a long time ago, I may have done better in my computer programming class and not had to drop out. Or maybe they did and I wasn’t listening, it’s possible since I was only like 20 years old or so. Many of the projects in Amazing Math Projects You Can Build Yourself seem more like games than learning, which is what makes this group of projects so much fun that your child will love completing them! There is also a companion website www.amazingmathprojects.com that includes video instructions for some of the projects as well as additional activities.

Amazing Math Projects You Can Build Yourself is another great addition to your child’s home library. If you home school your children you should definitely check out the fun and educational books put out by Nomad Press!

Candlewick Press recently sent me some great new books for the kids. First a little about Candlewick Press:

Candlewick Press, based in Somerville, Massachusetts, publishes outstanding children’s books for readers of all ages. Since we first opened our doors in 1991, we’ve received more than 1500 accolades and honors, and have been named “the fastest growing children’s publisher in the U.S.” by Publishers Weekly. A recent article in the Oakland Tribune noted:

If we are to remain a literary people, we must turn off the television and read books to our children. But what to read? In this glutted book market, mediocrity reigns.

Not so at Candlewick Press. . . . Lively stories, superior art, and revisited classics are hallmarks of this employee owned company. Bravo to leadership that recognizes quality writing and artistry and chooses to promote them.

How have we done it? By publishing only those books we believe in, only those books that speak to children, and only those that have both words and art of the highest quality. Why do we care so much? Because Candlewick Press is 100 percent owned and operated by our employees, making us one of the largest independent publishing companies, not just in the country, but in the world. Our independence and passion translates into the highest-quality books possible for you, our discriminating readers — the teachers, librarians, parents, and of course, children of all ages — who have learned to expect a truly wonderful book wherever the Candlewick logo appears.

Maisy Goes To The Museum:

On a rainy-day visit to the museum, Maisy and her friends explore everything from dinosaurs to a moon exhibit, from vintage vehicles to a giant dollhouse to the food exhibit. There’s always something new (or old) to see at a museum, and for little readers, it’s good to have a friend like Maisy along for the adventure.

From wooly mammoths to rocket ships, the marvels of a museum are more fun to explore when Maisy leads the way.

Retails for $12.99

My take: We have never been to a museum with the kids but after seeing how excited they were after reading this book it is a must thing to do this summer. Great book!

Haven Books is a dynamic English-language press based in Hong Kong. Our books focus primarily on Asian and international themes, and are enjoyed worldwide by readers of all ages. We publish strong, fresh titles on a wide variety of topics – including exciting fiction, cookbooks, photography and travel books, children’s illustrated books, young adult novels, and reference books. A founding member of the Independent Publishers of Hong Kong, Haven Books actively promotes Asia-based writers and literary organizations.

Animalympics:

Five wonderful storybooks (in a special slipcase box) follow the Tiger, Monkey, Antelope, Ostrich and Panda as they go on their fantastic athletic adventures. The animals work hard to try and make it to the games – and their antics teach us that even if you don’t win the medal, perseverance and spirit will always take you places.

My take: My boys enjoyed these stories although it was a little hard for the 4 year old to grasp the understanding that animals don’t really talk to humans LOL.

My oldest son, who is 4, is finding new ways every day to try to get under my skin. When I had the opportunity to review Betsy Brown Braun’s new book “You’re Not the Boss of Me”, I was very excited. First a little about Betsy:

Betsy, a renowned child development and behavior specialist, popular parent educator and mother of adult triplets is a frequent speaker at educational and business conferences. She has been a guest expert on The Today Show, The Early Show, Good Morning, America Now!! and on NPR and has been cited in USA Today, NY Times, Family Circle, Parents, Parenting, Cookie, and Woman’s Day among other publications. As the founder of Parenting Pathways, Inc, she offers private consulting and parent seminars as well.

What parent hasn’t thought her child was a brat at one point or another? Whether your child really is a brat, is at risk of becoming one, or is simply trying to grow up in a world filled with temptations and distractions, Betsy Brown Braun, bestselling author of Just Tell Me What To Say, has written the ultimate hands-on guide to cultivating, character traits that are tried and tested brat busters including gratitude, respect, honesty, independence and self reliance, among others.

Betsy’s down-to-earth advice and no-nonsense practical “tips and scripts” are derived from her expertise working with thousands of children (from toddlers to teens) and parents for over three decades. With Braun’s humorous, supportive and authoritative voice as a guide, parents can navigate some of the more difficult aspects of these formative years and lay the groundwork for their child’s future with confidence.

My take: I found this book very helpful….the tips are easy to use and easy to understand with favorable results. A big thumbs up!

I am always on the lookout for advice on how to raise my 2 rambunctious boys. I was recently offered the opportunity to review a new book called Preparing the Millennial Child by MaryAnn Ball:

With the recent recall of more than 1 million baby swings that caused deaths in three children and the rising anecdotal evidence of the dangers of vaccines, parents seem to have a tougher job than ever before. Raising a child today seems to be turning into a complex endeavor tackled by only the bravest of individuals. In an age of reality television, readily available internet access, and tell-all news coverage, children are growing up faster than ever before. Parents must find a new resource to help them in raising their millennial children, a generation that includes more than 80 million people. MaryAnn Ball has written a comprehensive book for every parent navigating these treacherous waters. Preparing the Millennial Child: Your Personal Parenting Class and Relationship Guide (Words on the Loose, June 2010), will change the way parents tackle raising healthy, happy and confident children.

Parents today face a host of issues not prominent in previous generations: trying to get their children into the best preschool, filling their afternoons full of activities either academic, artistic or athletic, restrictive diets and the rising issue of bullying. Sleep training, vaccinations, breast feeding, co-sleeping, punishing, rewarding, and learning how to say “no,” these are just a few of the obstacles that parents face every day.

How do parents know that they’re making the right decisions?

Mary Ann Ball’s book, Preparing the Millennial Child, takes a different approach than the traditional parenting books. It works as an instructional manual on how to become better parents by looking at themselves with a more discerning and introspective eye. It gives an in-depth psychological look into parenting, which not only tells what you should do as a parent but why you should do it.

My take: This is a very long, comprehensive book that took me several weeks to read through. I learned several techniques that have proven effective in managing some very rambunctious boys. Like all instructional manuals I don’t agree with all of the author’s points or views but believe there are numerous techniques all parents can benefit from.

I love reading books to my children but there are times I forget why I had these beautiful kids. This next book: Who Loves the Little Lamb? by Lezlie Evans helps me to remember.

“From dawn till after day is done, Mama loves her little one.”
A fussy lamb is crying, so her mama dries her tears. A noisy bird is chirping, so his mama gently sweetens his song. A sleepy kangaroo is fading, and her mama carries her in her safe, cozy pouch. Even when kids are not at their best, mothers love their little ones. Lezlie Evans’ warm, rhyming text delivers this reassuring message, and David McPhail’s charming watercolors of baby animals and their mamas strike the perfect tone: safe, sweet, and playful.

Evans’ displays her love of children in every book she releases. Who Loves the Little Lamb, inspired by her own six children, is a genuine reflection of her experience as a mother of young children. Booklist called Evans’ text, “Uncommonly clever” and the Children’s Book Guide states, “Who Loves the Little Lamb will be a favorite for your kids for years to come. It’s the kind of story that your children will ask to hear over and over. The tone and colors of the book will give them a sense of security. This tale of unconditional love will become a classic in your home.”

Retails on Amazon for $10.87.

My take: This is one of those books that delighted both my children and myself. The boys sat quietly (a very rare occurrence) and were almost lulled to sleep by the rhythmic words. I loved the soft illustrations and the sense of security the book gave my boys. It also helped me to remember to take a deep breath when I feel frustrated with their antics and to just love them for who they are.

50 Burning Questions- A Sizzling History of Fire

A red-hot feast of fiery facts—the first book in Annick’s new 50 Questions series.

If we took time to examine the flames in our world—fires that have built civilizations, sparked entire religions, and literally changed the surface of the Earth—can you imagine how many questions we would have? The 50 questions in this book may be just the beginning, but they will intrigue and excite young readers.

From the question of “Who’s for dinner?” (before mastering fire, humans were more likely to be prey than predators), to “Who were the first firefighters?” (Romans over 2,000 years ago), to “Why don’t firewalkers get toasted feet?” (theories abound, but no one knows for certain), the amazing answers reveal the crucial role fire has played for millennia.

With a humorous touch (“Who was the first hairy potter?”), Tanya Lloyd Kyi presents fascinating facts alongside innovative activities for kids, like sending breath through a glass jar and playing spy games with a flashlight. Each sidebar turns up the heat on the subject, while comical illustrations make for a fun and fiery visual presentation.

Retails for $12.95.

My take: While this book was not for my little ones I really enjoyed reading it. I learned so much and I know it will be used in the future when the boys become more and more interested in fire.

We are huge animal lovers in our house so this next book, How Do You Read to A Rabbit? was a natural choice for us…First a little about Annick Press:

Annick Press is recognized as one of the most innovative and cutting-edge publishers of books for children and young adults. True to its motto of ”Excellence and Innovation in Children’s Literature”, Annick Press is committed to creating dynamic, ground-breaking by Canadian and international authors. We constantly strive to offer children and teens positive reading experiences that are self-affirming, educational, and entertaining.

How Do You Read to A Rabbit?

Ever tried reading to an alligator?

Probably not. After all, he would most likely eat your book. How about a bat? Maybe that’s not such a good idea either—you’d have to read upside down in the dark!

Youngsters will laugh out loud at the antics of the thirteen animals—and the child who tries to read to them—in this delightful picture book. From bats to boas, and camels to kangaroos, the animals demonstrate the many challenges of reading to them: a boa might want to hug you a little too tight, and you’d have to jump pretty fast to keep up with a kangaroo. All ends well, however, as we see the child reading to his parents. Now that’s something easy to do!

The comical characters and repetitive text make this an ideal book for pre-schoolers who will only be too happy to come up with a host of other animals, and the reasons why it would be difficult to read to them as well.

Retails for $19.95 hardcover.

My take: This book was a hit at my house. The 4 year old especially loved it because I would ask him why you wouldn’t read to the animal and after looking at the illustrations he was able to answer my questions. Very, very cute book.

*********************************

My boys and I love books. Every night before we go to bed we read 3 books and boy do they struggle with the choices. I had a chance to review some great new titles from Annick Press. First a little about Annick Press:

Annick Press is recognized as one of the most innovative and cutting-edge publishers of books for children and young adults. True to its motto of ”Excellence and Innovation in Children’s Literature”, Annick Press is committed to creating dynamic, ground-breaking by Canadian and international authors. We constantly strive to offer children and teens positive reading experiences that are self-affirming, educational, and entertaining.

Chicken, Pig, Cow and the Purple Problem:

Who ever heard of a purple cow?

How come Cow’s spots are purple, when everybody else’s are gray or brown? Fed up with being different, Cow sets out on a quest to change her spots.

Thanks to a gravelly walkway, she soon finds lots of gray to cover the purple. And a squirrel in a tree provides plenty of brown by showering Cow with seeds. But when she arrives back home all big and bunchy and lumpy, Chicken and Pig hardly recognize her. When they finally realize it is Cow, they reassure her that she is their friend—purple spots and all.

The adorable Chicken, Pig, Cow—and Dog—are back, and continue to capture the hearts of young readers. The winning combination of simple text, expressive illustrations and lots of humor makes this a perfect choice for toddlers and beginning readers.

Retails for $19.95 hardcover.

My take: We all loved this book for several different reasons. The 2 year old loved pointing at the different animals and yelling their names, the 4 year old loved answering all the questions I posed to him about the book and I loved the message it sent- no matter what a person or thing looks like it is what is in the inside that really matters.

I have never heard of the book Mortimer but it has now become one of my 4 year old’s absolute favorite books.

Mortimer Board Book:

Oprah Book Club Choice now available as a board book.

With over half a million copies in print, MORTIMER is one of Robert Munsch’s most popular and beloved books. The story of a little boy who refuses to go to sleep has always resonated with young children—and the adults who read to them.

Now available as a board book, this modern classic is perfect for even the youngest child. While retaining the original story with all its humor, the revised text and child-friendly format make it appropriate for pre-schoolers—giggles guaranteed!

Retails for $6.95.

My take: This book is truly delightful for the adult as well as the child. I found myself getting into character and boy did my children laugh! I had to read the book 4 times before I was able to put it down and it consistently makes it into the nighttime book choices. Since then my 4 year old so loves this book he continues to ask for this book and sometimes sings himself to sleep with it.

The second installment in a New York Times best-selling series featuring three professional female crime fighters. Fox News legal correspondent Lis Wiehl teams up with veteran mystery novelist April Henry for this compelling new mystery. Warning: this one’s not for the faint of heart.

When the host of a popular Portland, OR radio talk show is murdered, the Triple Threat Club—a federal prosecutor, an FBI agent, and a journalist—must narrow down the lengthy list of suspects who wanted him dead.

Outspoken radio talk show host Jim Fate dies tragically and dramatically when poisonous gas fills his recording booth while his show, “The Hand of Fate” is on air. In the ensuing panic, police evacuate downtown Portland, leaving FBI Special Agent Nicole Hedges trapped in a high-rise building.

Crime reporter Cassidy Shaw is the only journalist brave enough to report from the scene as chaos overtakes the streets. And federal prosecutor Allison Pierce must rescue a child separated from her family even as she escapes the danger herself.

In the days following Fate’s murder, these three colleagues and friends team up to piece together the not-so public life of Jim Fate in order to uncover the stunning truth of who killed him—and why.

My take: I really liked this book, it was a very fast read. I am a big mystery fan reader so this book was perfect for me. I have not read the first book in this series and didn’t feel like the first book was a must read in order to follow Hand of Fate. My dislike: along with the main story, each of the 3 colleagues had personal issues as well which I thought was a bit too much. I wish the authors would have focused on the main story and maybe one of the personal issues. I would definitely recommend this book to others.

This book can be found at the publisher website or at Amazon or your local bookstores.

As we all know by now, books are one of my biggest loves. I was recently given the opportunity to review a great book from Barefoot Books:

Welcome to a place…where there’s always time for make believe. Where whimsical can be wise and learning can be fun. Where stories have the power to inspire children to explore, create, and connect to the wonders of the world around them. A world where everyone lives Barefoot.

I reviewed Animal Boogie:

Can you boogie? Down in the Indian jungle, the children and animals are learning about actions like leaping, stomping, shaking and flapping while meeting different jungle creatures. Book with CD editions include song sung by acclaimed children’s performer Fred Penner.

Retails for $8.99 softcover with CD (sale price, regular price $9.99)

Children and families can now sing along with creatures of the Indian jungle in a free animated video of The Animal Boogie at http://www.barefootbooks.com/animal_boogie_video.

My take: This book/CD was a huge hit at bedtime….so huge that it will now have to become a book to be read during the afternoon since the boys were so hyped up after dancing and looking at the book! And the video wa very cute and catchy!

Since our first success with The Legend of Sleeping Bear (Official Children’s Book of Michigan) in 1998, Sleeping Bear Press has impressed young readers, parents, teachers and booksellers with high-quality, beautifully illustrated picture books. As a small regional publisher based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, we’re proud to say that readers throughout the country know us by name. Our authors and illustrators are visiting more schools and bookstores than ever before. Our books have inspired sterling reviews, won awards, have been featured in presentations and even found their way under the White House Christmas tree. No matter our size, our goal remains the same: Provide books that enrich children’s lives through stories that blend entertaining text with educational content.

Now more than 10 years after the publication of The Legend of Sleeping Bear, our list has continued to grow and expand. In addition to our widely known Discover America State-by-State series, we have more than six different series including our Tales of Young Americans and our newest series Tales of the World.

S is for Shamrock: An Ireland Alphabet:

Small in size (less than 400 by 200 miles) the country of Ireland holds a big place in world and human history. And many from around the globe proudly lay claim to ancestral ties there. S is for Shamrock: An Ireland Alphabet gives readers a guided A-Z tour of this small island country whose influence extends far beyond its sea borders.

Famous landmarks such as the Blarney Stone and Finn McCool’s Giant Causeway speak to the land and history that shaped Ireland and its inhabitants. The prose and poetry of Eve Bunting, Irish native and children’s book author, bring the magic and mystery, character and culture of the Emerald Isle to vivid life.

To find recipes, games, interactives maps and much more for this title visit www.discovertheworldbooks.com!

Finn McCool is the largest giant in all of Ireland.

He’s a fierce warrior, even beating the giant Culcullan and saving Ireland from the Scots. Helpful and kind, he helps the farmers bring in the hay.

And everyone in the village of Drumnahoon admires him. “He’s the best-hearted man that ever walked on Ireland’s green grass.”

But for all his strength, courage, and goodness, there’s one thing that Finn lacks. He’s just not smart. And he knows it.

When a wise man living in a nearby village tells Finn about a magical red salmon with the wisdom of the world, Finn sets out to catch the fish.

And he learns a thing or two about himself in the process.

Sleeping Bear Press will soon be posting a recording of Eve Bunting (the author of both) reading from Finn McCool on our www.discovertheworldbooks.com website.

My take: As always, I loved the illustrations in both books…top notch. S is for Shamrock was very informative and just glancing through the book my in-laws recognized several things they had seen on their trip to Ireland. I have never been to Ireland but plan on visiting sometime in the future…I felt S is for Shamrock is a great way to get started learning about Ireland. Finn McCool and the Great Fish was my favorite though. I loved the moral of the story and how easily my 3 1/2 year grasped the whole concept once I explained it to him. This will quickly become a favorite in our house!

Sleeping Bear Press is generously offering 4 lucky Mommy PR reader their very own book: 2 will win Finn McCool and the Great Fish Book and 2 will win the S is for Shamrock: An Ireland Alphabet Book. (Each winner will receive 1 book).

The Snowman’s Song: A Christmas Story is a beautifully written children’s book about a young snowman with a seemingly impossible dream. Each day the snowman sets out fresh and hopeful and ends in disappointment and defeat. Ultimately hope comes in the form of a little girl who sees beneath the surface of frozen snow and believes in the dreams of the little snowman. The girls warmth, kindness and belief, combined with the magic and spirit of Christmas bring about the realization of the snowman’s dream.

The lesson of this story is not new, but is something that we all need to be reminded of. Especially this year as so many families are struggling with their own dreams and their doubts. We need to be reminded that we cannot give up and that our hopes and dreams combined with something far greater than any one of us on our own can ever be, is what this season and spirit of Christmas is all about.

The Snowman’s Song is beautifully illustrated by Tracy La Rue Hohn. Tracy manages to capture the emotions of the snowman perfectly in her illustrations and portrays them in such a sweet way. My kids loved looking at the pictures and telling me when the snowman was happy or sad. We all loved her whimsical style and beautiful use of colors!

Written by Marilee Joy Mayfield, The Snowman’s Song: A Christmas Story won Mom’s Choice Gold Award for holiday books in 2008. Marilee has written 11 books for children and has a new one set to publish in 3/2010.

Published by Leaping Antelope Productions, The Snowman’s Song: A Christmas Story is available for sales promotions, premiums and fund-raising. Leaping Antelope Productions develops and publishes children’s books, posters, cookbooks and how-to books. To see all the products they offer click here.

My thoughts: We loved this book and will be including it with our other favorite holiday annual book readings. This one is a bonus for me, because if you are like me and get choked up when reading precious children’s stories to your kids, you can just pop in the bonus audio CD with the recording of the story read by the author. Then you can just sit back and snuggle with your child and pretend that you do not have a lump in your throat! The Snowman’s Song: A Christmas Story is a beautiful book with a timely message and a definite must add to your holiday traditions!

Buy it: You may purchase The Snowman’s Song directly from Leaping Antelope Products online gift store or at www.snowmanssong.com for $19.95 however, for a limited time you can purchase this precious book (and the bonus cd) for $16.95.

Who knew that some insects can create explosions to get food? Or that fireworks were once used to fight wars?

Explosions are all around us, from the Big Bang that created the universe to the “pop” of a seedpod, from solar flares to the explosive gases lurking in a coal mine.

Full of fun facts, dramatic images and highlights of momentous blasts in history—including the infamous Halifax explosion of 1917— KABOOM! examines an astonishing variety of explosions and the science behind them. Many remarkable blasts are a result of human ingenuity, from carving the faces of four American presidents into a wall of granite on Mount Rushmore, to the development of asthma inhalers based on a beetle’s explosive pulses to scare predators.

The many exciting guises of explosions are revealed ways both engrossing and surprising.

Price: softcover $12.95.

My take: I like how easy this book was to read. The author took real life events and explained them in concepts very easy to grasp. A few of the topics covered: how popcorn pops, volcanoes and gunpowder.

THE PAPER BAG PRINCESS hardly needs an introduction. First published in 1980, and with over four million copies in print, this story of a feisty princess and her hapless prince has captured the hearts of readers young and old all around the world. THE NEW YORK TIMES called it one “of the best children’s books ever written,” while it has appeared countless times on Best Books lists across North America.

Now, even toddlers can enjoy this modern classic. While retaining the original storyline with all its humor and panache, a revised text for the 2-to-4-year old makes this version appropriate for pre-schoolers. The sturdy board book format is perfect for little hands.

Parents and grandparents who believe that it’s never too early to introduce kids to stories that excite, make them smile and showcase self esteem, will be delighted that they can now share this all-time favorite with even the youngest child.

My take: This book is very cute and the last page made both my husband and I laugh out loud. The illustrations are charming and my 3 1/2 year old has requested this book to be read multiple times!

Acclaimed children’s writer Hazel Hutchins explores the concept of what-goes-with-what in her new picture book for pre-schoolers, whether it’s buttons that keep your shirt together, or shoelaces that keep your feet in your shoes.
As young children struggle, literally, with keeping it all together, here’s the book to help them from coming undone, blowing away or falling apart. From getting dressed at the start of the day to leaving school at the end, there is plenty of opportunity throughout the story to make connections.

Price: Softcover $8.95.

My take: We loved the illustrations and my 3 1/2 year old had a lot of questions about this book. We talked about each page and I loved how many opportunities this book offered for learning experiences, he really understood the concept of keeping things together by the end of the book.

Time for another great book! I was recently given the opportunity to review 5 books from Annick Press.

I reviewed the Wiggle Giggle Tickle Train book:

A pony inspires a child to ride high on her father’s shoulders; a sailboat stirs two others to set off to sea in a cardboard box; and an airplane invites kids to soar like a bird.

In 13 stunning spreads, we see how children use the world around them as the inspiration for play. Vibrant photographs are juxtaposed with lively drawings to reveal the child’s own inventive interpretation. Short bursts of action-packed, rhythmic poetry encourage pre-schoolers to identify the patterning throughout the text and the sounds associated with each idea.

While developing language skills, kids can join in the fun as they create their own imaginative play from what they see around them.

Price: softcover $8.95 and hardcover $19.95

My take: This is a delightful book filled with drawings on 1 side of the book and photos on the opposite side. My 21 month old and 3 1/2 year old had fun with the words especially the last word on each page designed to to accompany the photos and drawings.
