Growing Tree Toys: Qwirkle Review

I was recently sent a great educational toy called Qwirkle, from Growing Tree Toys for my girls ages 6 and 10.  I would first like to share a little about Growing Tree Toys as a company:

We are more than just a website full of wonderful educational toys – we are a family-owned retail institution in our hometown of State College, PA! For over 30 years, our brick and mortar store has been changing the way children play by providing them with the highest quality toys available. After 25 years of selling toys to only our local customers, we “opened” GrowingTreeToys.com in late 2003, aiming to provide the same excellent toys and excellent service that has made us successful for years.

GrowingTreeToys.com is more than just a toy website – it’s the perfect virtual representation of our store, offering customers the amazing service, wonderful toys and robust features they deserve while shopping online. Featuring a carefully chosen, well-rounded toy selection, unique product details and descriptions, great information on play, helpful suggestions for gift givers, the best gift finder available, and so much more, GrowingTreeToys.com is truly a specialty toy website with the health and happiness of children at heart.

In addition to making children happy with the best educational toys, we want every customer to have a great experience while shopping with us online, which led us to create the Growing Tree Toys Promise. Our Promise is to offer:

  • A thoughtful selection of thousands of toys for children of all ages
  • 100% safe shopping on our secure website
  • An in-stock guarantee – if our site says an item is in stock, and we cannot ship it right away, it’s free!
  • Same day shipping for orders placed before 12:00 PM EST
  • Easy, hassle-free returns
  • 110% superior service – we want to make you happy!

We think you will agree – we offer customers a truly one-of-a-kind toy shopping experience in both our store and on our website. We invite you to join us and experience the wonder that comes from play and the wonderful world of good toys at Growing Tree Toys!*

You can find just about every kind of toy imaginable on their site.  You can shop by age, department or brand.  One of my favorite features is the gift finder which will help you choose a gift for a child of any age and gender, within your price range – it doesn’t get much easier than that!

We were able to pick a great family game to review for you:

Qwirkle is a great game for the whole family!  Created by Mindware, Qwirkle is great for kids ages 6 and up.  Although my 6 year old could not help with keeping score and it got a little challenging about halfway through the game for her.

The game consists of 108 wooden tiles with different shapes and colors that you need to match up to create overlapping and intersecting lines of 6 tiles.  Part way through the game it starts to look like a scrabble board or crossword puzzle without the words.

To win the Qwirkle Game, you must “combine strategy with quick thinking so your opponents cannot spoil your moves”.

Features

  • Award-winning strategy game that is fun for the whole family!
  • Game includes 108 wooden blocks with different colors and symbols
  • Players earn points by playing their tiles to match the colors and shapes of tiles already laid down – the more tiles they can play, the more points they can earn
  • No reading required
  • $24.95

My Thoughts: This is a fabulous kid friendly, family game that the adults will not dread playing.  It can get quite competitive with an older crowd or be a great learning game for younger kids.  My 6 year old quickly got the hang of matching up color or shapes and learned how to make and complete lines in the game.  After about half way through I had to help her with her moves from that point forward (she ended up winning and took all the credit heh…).

My 10 year old said she thought it was “pretty fun” and she would play it with her friends.  It was great for keeping her occupied and entertained without the television after she injured her arm at school last week!

Qwirkle will be added to our list of games that we will keep on hand for family game night!
