As a mom with 3 kids aged 4 and under I am no stranger to baby cereal in the house. But as soon as they are older the cereal gets pushed to the side. What if i told you that you could use Gerber cereals to COOK with?!! Why limit this product to just babies?
I recently gave this a try and whipped up the most amazing batch of brownies! The best part is that when you use the baby cereal you using an iron fortified ingredient that also has Vitablocks® blend of six B Vitamins, Vitamins E and C, iron, zinc, and calcium. I love this because I can add vitamins to your family’s food without them even knowing!
Gerber cereal comes in 4 great flavors: Oatmeal single-grain, MultiGrain, Oatmeal & banana, and Lil’ Bits (contain yummy bits of fruit). Just imagine the recipes you could make using these great products. Make delicious banana oatmeal muffins for breakfast by substituting the oatmeal for an equal amount of oatmeal or oatmeal & banana cereal. Any ingredient that has oatmeal could use the cereal. When I made my brownies it left a mild oatmeal flavor and such a smooth texture. My family gobbled them up! (and thought they were getting a treat)
(oatmeal fudge brownies made using Gerber Oatmeal cereal)

- 1 1/3 cup Gerber Oatmeal
- ¾ tsp baking soda
- ¾ cup butter (if using salted just cut back salt to 1/2 tsp)
- 1½ cups sugar
- 1 cup cocoa powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 Tbsp vanilla extract
- 3 large eggs
- 1¼ cup chocolate chips (I used Enjoy life mini chips)
- Preheat oven to 350 and grease an 8X8 pan
- Mix together Gerber oatmeal and baking soda. Set aside for later.
- Melt butter in microwave in different bowl
- Add sugar, cocoa powder, salt, and vanilla. Mix well.
- Add one egg at a time to wet mixture. Mix well.
- Add dry ingredients to wet ingredients. Mix until just mixed together.
- Add chocolate chips to mixture.
- Pour mixture into greased pan (I sprinkled a few extra chocolate chips on top).
- Cook for 30-35 minutes.
- Let cool for at least 20 minutes before cutting (or serve crumbly over ice cream right away )
- Enjoy!!!
These four cereals have a great easy open top that reseals to keep in the freshness and can be easily found at your local Wal-Mart! No more worrying about the cardboard box tipping over and cereal spilling everywhere (I’ve done this too many times to count in my mommy induced coma).
With my three kids I’ve found myself in a cooking rut more than once and cereal with milk has become the standard breakfast fare. I was so excited to make something new using these cereals. We now have cranberry oatmeal scones and the kids AGAIN think they’re being spoiled while I get to sit back, drink my coffee, and not have to force anyone to eat.
The possibilities are endless when you think about it!
