Today I get to introduce you to a fun magazine for tween girls! Discovery Girls is a destination where tween girls can express themselves, share ideas, connect with other girls and discover helpful tips for handling life’s ups and downs.
Discovery Girls articles and features are written by girls, for girls–which means our content touches on topics that really matter to tweens. Our goal is to help girls grow and develop, forming a positive sense of self through solutions that build confidence, resilience and independence.

2010 also marked a huge milestone for us! We celebrated 10 successful years of empowering girls and inspiring them to be more confident and love who they are.
My Thoughts: What a confusing time of life we are heading into! My daughter is dealing with things in school that I am sure didn’t start at 11 when I was her age. At least that is the way I remember it! It is an emotional time, filled with questions about friendships, budding interest in boys, growing and developing bodies and conflict between wanting to grow up and have more freedom and still wanting to play and just be a kid. Even my 7 year old comes home from school saying that kids are telling her that princesses are for babies and they make fun of her for wanting to be one. It’s such an emotional roller coaster for me and when I see their sweet, still innocent, faces looking at me and trusting me to have the answers and to fix things for them – I feel almost panicked! Honestly, it’s been a long time since I when through all of this and the way I remember it is NOT the way it seems to be today.
We received the February/March 2011 regular edition and the Middle School Edition. The Middle School Edition has the same feature articles as the regular edition but includes several pages of content geared towards girls 11 and up. My 11 year old liked the Middle School Edition better, but my almost 8 year old loved the regular edition. Some of the things that my girls most enjoyed were the fun quizzes, the question and answer segments, the fashion, skin care, Stars Speak Out (about peer pressure) and the most embarrassing moments. My oldest daughter read all of the friendship stuff first including the book we received called Questions Answered. I found the content to be age appropriate and the magazine is not overrun with ads.
I really like that the magazine is created mainly by kids. Both of my girls want to apply to be a Discovery Girl when they come to our state. I think it is fun for them to see girls their ages from other states and be able to read about their interests and personalities. It shows them that kids care about the same things no matter where they come from.
I am pretty conservative on what I allow my girls to watch, read and be exposed to. I thought the advice given was pretty good and supports the values that I am trying to instill in my girls. Overall I found Discovery Girls Magazine to be a great resource for my growing (way to fast) girls and I know they are both looking forward to receiving the next issue!
