Castle In The Mist

Planet of the Dogs, Volume 2

By Stella Mustanoja McCarty(Illustrator) and Robert McCarty(Author)

“After a year of peace Bik, the warrior-chief of  Stone City, is preparing for war. His children have been kidnapped by Prince Ukko, the leader of the Black Hawk tribes, and held prisoner in the Castle In The Mist. This is the story of how the dogs came down from their planet, to the land of the Forest People, to free the children and prevent war.

The Black Hawk soldiers had never seen dogs before. They had no knowledge of their courage, cleverness and endurance. And they had no idea that the dogs, through their extraordinary sense of smell, could see in the darkness and foggy mist that enveloped the Castle and the great forest.

When the winter snow falls, and the land is covered in white, it is the working dogs who challenge King Ukko and his warriors — and bring peace to the land of the Forest people.“*

My Thoughts: Please check out my reviews of the first book Planet Of The Dogs and also of  Snow Valley Heroes: A Christmas Tale both part of the Planet Of The Dogs Series!   We were instantly captivated by the two books mentioned above and this one was no different.  We had high expectations for this book based on our experience with the first ones that we read, so we looked forward to starting Castle In The Mist with eager anticipation.  Immediately we were drawn into the story of kidnapped children, a frantic father and a bitter and unhappy prince.  Once again it is up to the Planet Of The Dogs to plan a rescue and work their way into hardened hearts.

What I love most about Castle In The Mist, as well as the other books is that the focus is mainly about the dogs and how they change the hearts of adults through love, affection, companionship and devotion.  From the beginning we were always rooting for the dogs to succeed in their mission of saving the children without having the conflict turn to war.  War would bring an end to the year of peace that the Stone City Warriors had been enjoying.

But this one seemed like an insurmountable mission for the dogs and would they really be able to succeed this time?  I will not spoil it for you by giving you the ending, because I want you to enjoy the story for yourself!  It is well worth reading!  If you have children that love animals, especially dogs, or if you want an easy Sunday afternoon read for yourself be sure to pick up all of the Planet Of The Dog books!

Personally, I have yet to read any of the books in this series but have heard nothing but good reviews of these books. I would like to read Planet of the Dogs since it is the first book in the series. I think that this would be a great book to have in the classroom for all of my students to read.

While visiting Barking Planet, I ran across an offer for them to send a book to teachers, librarians, and therapy dog owners to be read to the therapy dogs. I am sent them an email requesting a copy for my dad to read to the therapy dogs when they visit the retirement center where he is staying each month.

    Thank you,
