Rock ‘N Learn Phonics DVD Review & Giveaway

I was recently given the opportunity to review the first two DVD’s in the multi-DVD program Rock ‘N Learn Phonics. I was especially eager to review these DVD’s because, as most of you have probably noticed, my youngest daughter is adopted from China so her first language was not English. The progress we have made in the past two and a half years since first coming home has been amazing but hard earned. It took two rounds of Kindergarten for us to get the alphabet and sight words down enough for her to be ready to start first grade. With me working full time now, I didn’t have enough time to work with her as extensively one on one as I have done before and I was worried about how much she has been retaining over the summer.
Enter Rock ‘N Learn Phonics DVD’s: “Phonics video DVD programs and audio CDs that get results. Rock ‘N Learn Phonics DVD and audio CD programs provide an easy and fun way to learn the phonics skills that lead to reading and spelling success. Catchy songs and rhymes help students remember basic phonics rules, vowels, consonants, blends, digraphs, silent e, and much more. Delayed answers and the on-screen mouth (Phonics videos) allow learners to check their progress and use these programs independently. Our new Phonics Volume 1 and Phonics Volume 2 DVDs have been improved in two ways: much better animation and a lot more content to help students become confident readers. Students practice reading sentences and stories to apply the rules they have learned. These phonics video programs now have fun characters, sentence practice, read-along stories, and exercises to boost fluency.
Rock ‘N Learn Phonics DVD Volume 1: Practicing the phonics skills that lead to reading and spelling success is more fun than ever. We’ve turbocharged our best-selling Phonics video program with new, enhanced animation along with sentence and story practice. Catchy rhymes make rules easy to remember. Delayed answers and our “on-screen mouth” let students check their reading and pronunciation. Read-along stories and fun songs provide practice with rules and build reading fluency. Context clues help students develop multiple strategies to read for meaning. Ages 6 & up. Approx. 70 minutes.
My Thoughts: I brought this with me in the car the day it arrived and popped it in the DVD player on our way back from picking my daughter up from day camp. Right away she was clapping and bee bopping along to the music. Volume 1 focuses on short vowels, consonants, blending & digraphs, word families, the silent e and read-along stories. At first I was really worried that she had forgotten everything she has learned so far but it wasn’t long and she was talking right along with the characters. Everything is done to a beat which helps clue her in to when it’s her time to try the words. Everyday on the way to and back from camp she asked for her DVD. Once we had gone through completely twice, she was well in the groove of learning. I loved it because I didn’t have to sit and watch with her but could listen to how she was doing and I really got a kick out of how much fun she had with it!
Rock ‘N Learn Phonics DVD Volume 2: “Practice is the key to reading and spelling success—and now it’s more fun than ever. We’ve turbo charged our best-selling Phonics Volume 2 builds on Volume 1, with catchy rhymes to make rules easy to remember. Delayed answers and our “on-screen mouth” let students check their reading and pronunciation. Read-along stories and fun songs provide practice applying the rules and building reading fluency. Context clues help students develop multiple strategies to read for meaning. Ages 6 & up. Approx. 78 minutes.”
My Thoughts: Volume 2 focuses on long vowels, vowel combinations, syllables, ending sounds, silent consonants, rule breakers, read-along sentences, read-along stories, and sing-along songs. This one was a little more advanced and at first she wasn’t getting very many of the “fill ins” right, but it wasn’t long before she was sounding out even the harder words and doing very well with syllables and the read-along sentences. I don’t want to sound like a lazy mom (but am an overly busy one), but I absolutely LOVE how this captivated her attention right from the very start and she was perfectly happy to follow along and learn on her own. She loved the characters, especially the white chipmunk, and the singing. I found the Rock ‘N Learn Phonics DVD’s to be an amazing tool that I highly recommend trying out, especially if you have a child who struggles to learn with traditional approaches. The multi-sensory instruction put to use in these DVD’s might really help to make learning easier for your child! I am sure you kids will love them as much as mine does!
