Dork Diaries + Simply Create Kids Review & Giveaway

I was super excited when I was offered the opportunity to review not just one fabulous tween product, but two of them in one great combined review and giveaway!  Let’s start with Dork Diaries – check out the trailer to the books!

If you have a tween or early teen in your family, then you are going to love the new series Dork Diaries by Rachel Renée Russel!  We received what my daughter called a “squeakin” package from Rachel  (squeakin means uber awesome or fantastical) and my daughter had a total blast checking out everything that came in the package.  We received both the Dork Diaries Tales from a NOT – SO – Fabulous Life and Dork Diaries Tales from a  NOT  -SO – Popular Party Girl along with some cute accessories plus a perfectly sized bag to carry them in – one of the best product presentations we have seen!

  • About Dork Diaries, Tales from a NOT-SO-Fabulous LifeNew school.  New mean girl.  New crush. New diary so Nikki can spill about ALL OF IT…
Dork Diaries follows eighth grader Nikki Maxwell, who chronicles through text and sketches her move to a snooty new school; her epic battle with her mom for an iPhone; her enthusiasm for drawing & art; and a love/hate fascination with the new school’s queen bee, a girl named Mackenzie who becomes Nikki’s rival in a school-wide art competition.

Our Thoughts: Renée instantly transported me back to the middle school drama days through Nikki Maxwell’s diary entries.  Written with a humorous tone but touching on reality enough that you can totally experience Nikki’s life through her words.  Having moved several times throughout my school years, I found Nikki’s story easy to relate to with an all too familiar ring to it. My daughter and I read this first book together and really enjoyed our time spent reading aloud to each other and following Nikki through her first month and a half at her new school. My daughter, who had a rude introduction to girl drama last school year, was emotionally connected with Nikki as she navigated through the days dealing with the “mean girl”.   Nikki is completely likable and I am sure that she will bring out a little bit of the inner dork in all of us (it’s a good thing)!

About Dork Diaries, Tales from a NOT-SO-Popular Party Girl:   Recipe for disaster4 parties.  Add 2 friends and 1 crush.  Divide by 1 mean girl out to RUIN Nikki. Mix well, put fingers over eyes, and CRINGE!

Settled in at her new school and flanked by awesome friends Chloe and Zoey, life is looking up for Nikki Maxwell, especially since her crush, Brandon, asked her to be his lab partner—a seriously awesome development. However, when Nikki overhears mean girl Mackenzie bragging that Brandon’s taking her to the Halloween dance, a bummed Nikki signs on to spend Halloween at a kids’ party with her little sister, Brianna, instead. After she finds out Mackenzie was lying and her dream of going to the party with Brandon could be a reality, Nikki has two events to juggle . . . plus plenty of other entertaining trials and tribulations along the way!

My Thoughts: I have to admit that I was looking forward to the second book in the series and seeing how things would turn out with Brandon.  Book two takes off right were the first one left off.  Nikki reminds me of a little more mature Junie B (another series I loved to read with Hanna when she was younger)… she has good intentions and means well, but things don’t always go real smoothly for her.  Sometimes I found myself wishing that Nikki would actually say out loud some of the things she was keeping inside her head – especially to the mean girl Mackenzie!  You will definitely want to check out this fun series as it is sure to become a favorite among tweens everywhere (and us older fans too)!  We are anxiously waiting for book 3!

About the Author: Rachel Renée Russel is originally from Michigan (just like me!) and grew up near the shores of Lake Michigan.  She currently resides in northern Virginia and has two daughters.  Her youngest daughter Nikki helps with the illustrations  (which are totally fab by the way!!).  Rachel is an attorney that enjoys writing children’s books more than practicing law (understandable since I enjoy reading her books more than I enjoy practicing my accounting!).  Rachel looks forward to adopting 3 children in the near future and if they are anything like my littlest one, she will be having a lot more material to use for her future books!

As fabulous as Dork Diaries is, we have even more to share with you today!  If you have not heard of Simply Create Kids yet, you are going to be head over heels about this site once you see what the owner Johanna Waisley has created!  I have said it before and I am going to say it again… if you want someone to go totally nuts over your product, put their child on it – or in this case their child’s art work on it!!

Do you have stacks of art work that you just can’t seem to part with?  I have folders, notebooks and boxes full of my children’s treasures that are just too precious to just throw out with the trash… but at their ages of 10 and 7 we have become pretty full in our storages areas and with still several years of masterpieces yet to be created ahead of us!  Johanna has come up with the most wonderful solution to turn our children’s artwork into fantastic pieces fit perfectly for framing!

About Simply Create Kids: A GREAT SOLUTION TO DISPLAY YOUR KID’S ARTWORK! Your child makes beautiful art, and you want to put it on display in a clean, professional looking way. Our designs fit tastefully with any home decor. You will want to show off this Masterpiece Display to everyone who stops by.

My Experience and Thoughts: When I first started working with Johanna she gave me the choice between a brand new design that holds 6 works of art or their 9 piece collage.  I decided to go with the 6 piece because I liked the bigger pictures in the design.  All I had to do once I decided which design I wanted was to take photos of the 6 pieces of artwork and email them off to Johanna.

All of them were similar sizes to the two she is holding in the above picture except for one which was considerably smaller.  Some were vertical and some were horizontal and all of them had been folded and collected in folders over the past couple of years (read wrinkles and creases).  I wasn’t sure how she was going to make it work but was absolutely thrilled with the final result:

Hanna was almost as excited about the final result as I was!  It is absolutely gorgeous and I can’t wait to have it framed and get it hung in our home.  This is going to be one of my most treasured pieces for sure and I can’t wait to gather up my youngest daughters art pieces and have one done for her as well!

What a great gift this would be for Mother’s Day or for Grandparents!  Need a great party idea?  Have each guest create a masterpiece for your tween and then have them made into a priceless keepsake for her to hang on her wall (thanks for the great idea Lauren!!).  I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my collage and I know you would love yours just as much!

I love the DD blog, which keeps up with current events.
I also like that you can choose to include 6 to 16 art pieces in your Simply Create Kids poster.
