Ah-CHOO! The Uncommon Life of Your Common Cold Review & Giveaway
Ah-CHOO! The Uncommon Life of Your Common Cold
by:Jennifer Ackerman

“Some colds are like mice, timid and annoying; others like dragons, accompanied by body aches and deep misery. In AH-CHOO!, Jennifer Ackerman explains what, exactly, a cold is, how it works, and whether it’s really possible to “fight one off.” Scientists call this the Golden Age of the Common Cold because Americans suffer up to a billion colds each year, resulting in 40 million days of missed work and school and 100 million doctor visits. They’ve also learned over the past decade much more about what cold viruses are, what they do to the human body, and how symptoms can be addressed.“
About the Author: “Jennifer Ackerman’s most recent book is Sex Sleep Eat Drink Dream: A Day in the Life of Your Body. Her previous books include Chance in the House of Fate: A Natural History of Heredity, and Notes from the Shore. A contributor to National Geographic, The New York Times, and many other publications, her articles and essays have been included in several anthologies, among them Best American Science Writing, The Nature Reader, and Best Nature Writing. Jennifer lives in Charlottesville, Virginia. ” You can visit her website at www.jenniferackerman.net.
My Thoughts: Did you know that on average we spend about five years (200 colds) of our lives suffering from colds? How miserable! Can you imagine volunteering to be infected with the rhinovirus, which is responsible for 40% of all colds? I sure can’t but that’s exactly what Jennifer Ackerman did – talk about dedicated! Ah-CHOO! is packed full of an incredible amount of information – like for instance, once the virus enters your nose (or tear ducts) it only takes 24 hours for infected cells to turn out millions of new viruses and that suffering can begin just a mere 12 hours after being infected. I learned the most popular places that the germs hang out like play equipment, fitness centers, shopping cart handles. Some things I knew, but many I did not! Jennifer goes into great detail about every thing you could ever want to know about the common cold and many details (like the section on nose picking) that you may not be so thrilled to learn. You will learn ways to avoid them (not anti-bacterial hand wash!) and the most effective treatments. The book is written in an easy to read style that was really quite entertaining while being extremely informative. With school back in session for most of us this is a great resource to have on hand that will cover everything from “old-wives tales” to tried and true forms of cold relief along with some great recipes for some good old fashion comfort foods. If we are going to spend five years of our lives with a cold, we might as well take advantage of Jennifer Ackerman’s knowledge and make it the least miserable experience as possible!
