“Top 100 Finger Foods” by Annabel Karmel: Review & Giveaway

Annabel Karmel is the UK’s best-selling author of seventeen books on baby and children’s food and nutrition.  She is an expert in devising tasty and nutritious meals for children without the need for parents to spend hours in the kitchen

A mother of three, Karmel has become a cookbook phenomenon.   Her series of home-made recipes for babies and toddlers have sold over 3 million copies worldwide. Her Complete Baby and Toddler Meal Planner has become the authoritative guide on feeding babies and children and is regularly in the top five cookery titles.

Today I have the pleasure of introducing you to TOP 100 FINGER FOODS:  100 Recipes for a Healthy, Happy Child recently released on Feburary 9, 2010.

Top 100 Finger Foods

By the age of nine months, many babies want to start feeding themselves but can’t yet handle a spoon, which is when finger foods come into their own. They’re also great to offer to toddlers who are prone to go into ‘meltdown’ just before dinner.

This essential collection of tempting, nutritious finger foods features 100 quick and easy recipes, including fresh fruit ice lollies – perfect for soothing sore gums – goujons of fish and raw vegetables with dip, that will that will not only introduce your baby to new textures and tastes but will make for a healthy, happy and contented child.

My Thoughts: My kids were immediately attracted to this book and wanted to go through and pick out the recipes that they most wanted to try.  Rylee’s picks are Krispie Chicken Nuggets, Welsh “Rabbits” and Chinese Glazed Chicken Wings.  Hanna’s choices are Apricot-Dijon Drumsticks, Beefy Hand Pies (using ground pork instead) and Minty Lamb Koftas.

Personally I was very pleased with how beautifully the cookbook is put together.  The pictures are bright and appealing, with foods that children will like to eat. When I first flipped through the book I was a little disappointed because it looked like there was a lot of fried foods in it.  However, when I sat down with it, I found that many of the foods were actually baked or broiled in the oven.  The preparation time on almost all of the recipes is under 15 minutes with many cooking times are under 20 minutes.  For the most part the ingredients are fairly common items that I would think most people would have on hand.  For some recipes there are quite a few (ingredients), but overall the preparation seems fairly simple.   I love the variety of different recipes and great ideas for turning some pretty common ingredients into some really special and fun meals!  With Top 100 Finger Foods Annabel Karmel creates a fun and fresh child cookbook with great family friendly recipes!
