Amazing Africa Projects You Can Build Yourself: Review & Giveaway

AfricaDon’t you just love finding something that is fun AND educational at the same time?  Amazing Africa Projects You Can Build Yourself by Carla Mooney is a wonderful book full of interesting facts, information and fun craft projects to help you get to know the incredible continent of Africa.

About the book (from Nomad Press):“All eyes will be on Africa in 2010 when South Africa hosts the Soccer World Cup, an athletic event that rivals the Olympics in enthusiasm and anticipation. While Africa is one continent, it contains many diverse countries. Amazing Africa Projects You Can Build Yourself introduces readers ages 9 and up to the stunning landscapes, ancient civilizations and tribes, unique traditions, and amazing wildlife of the vast African continent.

Through 25 fun projects that use common household supplies and recycled materials, kids will be able to learn what life is like in Africa. Step-by-step instructions show young readers how to make their own shields for an initiation ceremony, cook banana fritters and benne cakes, and design animal masks to commemorate the seasons. Through Amazing Africa Projects, Kids will celebrate Africa and its place in our world.”*

My Thoughts: This book went way beyond my expectations!  I was fascinated from the very beginning and maybe more so because I have a friend that just moved to Egypt.  The first chapter starts out with information about the Nile, its history and its continued importance to life in Africa today.  I can picture my friend having dinner on the banks of the Nile River and now we can learn more about this captivating place!  We went on to learn facts such such as the mosquito, and then the hippopotamus, are responsible for the most human deaths in Africa.  We also learned about Africa’s “Garden of Eden” and the thirty thousand animals that live there.  I could go on and on with interesting things we have learned, but I don’t want to give it all away!

As the title suggests there are projects to do as well.  I was hoping to have a couple done before I posted this review, but we have been incredibly busy the last couple of weeks.  However, we have two marked to complete hopefully this weekend.  We are planning to make Zitumbuwa (Banana Fritters) and also African Rain Sticks.  Doesn’t that sound like fun?  This book is recommended for 9 years and up, but my 6 year old has been right here with us enjoying the information, asking questions and even helped us pick out which projects we would do first.

Amazing Africa Projects You Can Build Yourself is a great addition to your child’s home library.  If you home school your children you will love the way this book is presented!  It’s has a great easy to read format and unique project ideas that are laid out with easy to follow instructions using commonly found supplies.  Many of them could even be completed by older children all by themselves – no adult help needed.  I think this is a must have for parents looking to expand their children’s view of the world!
