I was recently offered the opportunity to review the book Parenting with Pets, The Magic of Raising Children with Animals.

First I would like to share a little about the book from the Parenting with Pets website:

dog_sense002001“Parenting with Pets offers insight into the magic of raising children with animals and how pets bring never ending learning opportunities into the family. Written by Christine Hamer and Margaret Hevel, this mother and daughter team share their invaluable advice with readers on how pets enrich the relationship between parent and child, and how the nonjudgmental companionship a pet provides can restore balance in the whole family. Parents will appreciate the many examples of challenging life lessons and how our pets can be the most effective teachers. Fascinating and informative, Parenting with Pets is an essential guide for those interested in raising compassionate, responsible and thoughtful children.”

My Thoughts: Parenting with Pets is a great book full of information, tips and ideas of ways to use every day experiences with your pets as teaching moments for your children.  If you or someone you know is considering getting a family pet this book is excellent in helping to prepare yourself and your children for the responsibilities of pet ownership.

One of my favorite ideas from the book is teaching your child budgeting through pet ownership.  This is something I had never considered in our own home.  I loved the idea and definitely will be implementing it with my almost 10 year old!

I wish I had read this book before we brought pets into our family.  I remember how stressful puppy training and child training was and we were not fully prepared for taking on two additional “kids”.  We worked our way through it, but reading this book first would surely have eased the transition.  Now our boys (miniature dachshunds that have somehow outgrown their “miniature” status) are fully part of our family and bring much joy to our two girls!

One of my favorite things to do right now is walk the dogs with my oldest daughter.  We use this time to discuss anything that’s on her mind, bothering her or she has questions about.  I have found that the activity of walking the dogs seems to make the conversations flow easier.  We have started to discuss more complicated issues as she enters her tween years and walking and talking seems to open the lines of communication and make potentially “embarrassing” questions easier for her to ask.  I hope our family pets will help us ease into the teen years too when the time comes.

Thank you to the writers for giving me the opportunity to review this wonderful book.  Parenting with Pets is a must read for anyone considering bringing a pet into their home!

I think it is important to mesh a family together with an animal the right way. Especially if the family pet has been a focal point for many years before a child is introduced into the family.

Pets & children mean never coming home to an empty house. I love the comfort & unconditional love that pets bring into our lives.

  6. Ellen says:

When I was a kid we didn’t have pets, but when my kids were young we always had pets – rabbits, dogs, cats and even a horse. The animals teach us compassion and responsibility and force us to teach that to our children. This book would make a great gift for several families that I know – thanks for the chance!

One way I am a better parent b/c I own pets is explained in the library section of their website. They describe how to prevent animals bites from both cats and dogs and having a pet means you can demonstrate with your pet. So definately helps teach kids responsibilty. Informative article.
