In Praise Of Stay-At-Home Moms Book Review/Giveaway!

They number in the millions and they are incredibly important to families and to our society, yet they are underappreciated, little respected, and even controversial.
Who are they?
They are the stay-at-home moms.
These are women who know in their hearts that staying home to raise their children is the right choice for the whole family. Some do it from the outset of their marriages, while others make the difficult transition from career-driven women to homemakers. Either way, it is a choice that is incredibly rich and rewarding, not to mention challenging.
Now Dr. Laura, building on principles developed during her long career as a licensed marriage and family therapist, provides a wealth of advice and support, as well as compassion and inspiration, to women as they navigate the wonders and struggles of being stay-at-home moms.
Learn how to:
* to hold your head high and deal with naysayers;
* to see the benefits of being home not only for your children but also for your marriage;
* to understand the changes you see in yourself;
* to realize that the sacrifices you endure now will make for lasting bonds and a stronger family, in addition to a more cohesive community.
In Praise of Stay-at-Home Moms is a special book, a profound and unique understanding of how important it is for mothers to raise their own children.
I couldn’t have received this book at a better time in my life. Moving from Oklahoma back home to Southern California was SUCH a change after becoming a mother. Being back home in California has brought challenges I never even thought I would face or question. Being a Stay-At-Home-Mom, for me, has been a tough decision. Well, honestly, not at first. I KNEW this is what I wanted. I had ALWAYS wanted to be a mom and could not wait! I knew I had plenty of time for a career later on when my children where all in school, because for me, a mom is the “career” I had always longed for. To me, that is the most important “job” I could have, the “career” that would make the most difference in my life as well as my family. And it was great, the (almost) first year of my son’s life. We had a three bedroom house in Oklahoma and being a Stay-At-Home-Mom was nothing out of the ordinary, in-fact most moms stay home there. Well, we ended up leaving Oklahoma and moving back home to California because for both my husband and I, California just feels like “home”. We grew up here, pretty much ALL of our family is here and we wanted to be near them again. Life has been ROUGH since we got back here, I’m not going to lie! It took months for our house to sell, we got behind on our bills, had a miscarriage and we are living in an apartment. (Not that living in an apartment is bad, it’s just not where we can or want to raise our family.) Since money has gotten tight, I have often gone back and forth as to rather I should get a part-time job or not. As bills pile up, I often feel guilty for staying at home when I could be out working, helping us get out of debt. I can’t imagine anyone else raising my child though, and my husband and I both agree this is what we want. There is nothing that brings me more joy than to watch my son grow and learn every single day. But, I let other people’s opinions get in the way sometimes. I let them actually make me feel stupid for giving up my career as a hair stylist to stay home with my son. L.A. is such a money driven community that I honestly feel alone in this sometimes. A couple of my friends do stay home with their kids, but we are the very few. I honestly can’t believe I have had my life-long dream questioned once I moved back to California because in Oklahoma, it was always “Awesome, great choice!” I knew this is what I wanted for my kids, I still know, but it is hard sometimes feeling like you are the only one in your city. When you have a TV stylist ask why would you stay home and not work, it makes you kinda sit back and wonder. Why am I? Well, after reading this book, I KNOW with out a single doubt that this is where I need to be, at home with my son. Yes, there are times where I think having a job would be easier, or having our debt paid off and having a nice car sounds amazing, but I know my son NEEDS me, right now. My kids will always need their parents, but I will never ever get these first few years back. Debt can always be paid off and we are working very hard towards that, but money is something that you can always make more of and it will always be there (or not..ha!), but Malachi, he will only be a toddler once….one time! I can’t imagine not being there to see him take his first steps or learn how to crawl. I will NEVER regret missing those moments at all. I know in my heart that it will all be worth it. This book has been such a VERY needed encouragement to me! And, like the book, I am not saying that every mom should stay home. I am not trying to preach or to debate this issue, I am simply sharing my personal journey with you and how this book has confirmed my choice. Thank you Dr. Laura for writing this book, you have no idea how much encouragement you have brought to my life. I LOVED reading stories from your listeners/readers and hearing what you had to say. If you are a Stay-At-Home-Mom or considering it, you NEED to read this book. Seriously.
